To continue to be the voice that connects citiens with all of the imperative information that you have the right to know - transparency.
To continue to work towards making our neighborhoods great; building better roads and sidewalks and offer opportunities for creativity, diversity, and mobility.
To celebrate our rich and multicultural community by changing the perception of our neighborhoods, rehabilitating them into a more attractive place for new residents and businesses and enhancing the quality of life for our residents "one block at a time."
I’m Sharon McDonald, your City Commissioner for District 5, your Mayor Pro Tem, and a lifelong resident of this incredible community. I’m running for mayor because I believe in Alamogordo’s potential—a city where our neighborhoods thrive, our businesses grow, and every resident feels heard and a part of our community.
I was raised in Alamogordo and attended school in this community from elementary (Dudley) to high school. I graduated from Alamogordo High School and attended Western New Mexico University for one and half years, I continued my education while working full time and obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration from Indiana University (SB).
I married a resident of Alamogordo; Edward McDonald who was a local sports hero and was drafted to the NFL. We grew up here together. Together we have five children, ten grandchildren and a generation to come that will forever keep us young at heart.
As a resident of Alamogordo, New Mexico, you always have an extended family including neighbors, classmates, church members, old and new friends from near and far. They are people you never forget and make this community an amazing place to get together for reunions. We always pick up where we left off and have a great time.
My professional experiences include a little bit of everything from clerical to a manager of employee benefits. I find that helping people makes a job worth doing.
I have devoted my time and energy to organizations that help our community, schools, businesses, families, children, and education for a more resilient town. I love working hard for the citizens of District 5 to help beautify our neighborhoods, enhance services, work to rid blight and to improve roads and sidewalks.
I enjoy working the polls at election time, participating in Alamogordo MainStreet and Chamber of Commerce meetings, to engage and to know what is happening with people around our community and to hear their thoughts and perspectives.
I’ve championed the Dudley School redevelopment, community gardens, New York Avenue 800 and 900 Block makeover, new roads and sidewalk improvements, and was awarded the White Sands Rotary Club Professional Person of the Year Award for 2023, as a result of my community service, to include the annual District 5 Cleanup Initiative that has now grown to a city wide cleanup.
I’ve constantly walk the neighborhoods, and listened to your hopes for our city. As your Commissioner, I’ve delivered results: new sidewalks from 2nd to 8th Streets within the inner city, the revitalized Dudley School, vibrant community gardens, and the transformation of New York Avenue's 800 and 900 Block into a corridor we’re all proud of with a ribbon cutting planned for the end of October. These aren’t just projects—they’re proof that when we work together, Alamogordo shines together, "one block at a time."
I love to walk, watch sports, travel, hang out with family and friends and enjoy good food.
Our city faces challenges: ensuring a sustainable water supply, roads in need of repair, better sidewalks, keeping our streets safe, and growing our economy.
As mayor, I’ll bring the same hands-on leadership I’ve shown in District 5—securing Community Development Block Grants, partnering with MainStreet for small business growth, and listening to you, whether you’re a retiree, a military family, or a young entrepreneur.
I collaborate across party lines and operate with nonpartisan blinders, because being mayor isn’t about politics—it’s about people.
On November 4, you have a choice. With five candidates, this race is about who can deliver.
I’m the only candidate with a proven track record of getting things done—six years of service, countless projects, and a commitment to every district, not just one.
My opponents are each honorable, but my successes, a proven track record in District 5, the inner city areas neglected for decades, has focused on more infrastructure (roads, sidewalks, water), more investment, more progress, more small busines opportunities, each shows I’m ready to lead Alamogordo forward.
Imagine an Alamogordo with better roads and sidewalks, safer streets, thriving businesses, and clean water for generations.
That’s my vision, and I need your vote so in partnership we can make it happen.

Sacramento Learning Park is a small neighborhood park located behind Alamogordo High School in the Chihuahuita neighborhood, a historically underserved and economically challenged area of the city. The park came into existence through the efforts of Commissioner Sharon McDonald, who championed its creation partnering with the APS System and the city of Alamogordoto turn blight a place to be proud of The park serves neighborhood residents and students from the high school and represents a municipal investment in community well-being and youth recreation.
The removal of blighted areas and buildings that are out of compliance is both a safety and security concern and lowers property values. Sharon McDonald has worked passionately to deliver ordinances and work with code enforcement to secure the tools to rid the city of blight. An example of a blighted block being transformed is the block near the Dudley School that now hosts a community garden and maintained by With Helping Hands. Nearby houses are upgrading and cleaning up and the block is safer due to activity and revitalization.
Converting the blighted and dangerous Dudley School: one of the oldest structures in Alamogordo, New Mexico; into a community center is a task a community volunteers have been taking on under the leadership of the Tularosa Basin Historic Society and the city of Alamogordo.
This project was championed by the Tularosa Basin Historic Society among the nonprofit sector, and by District 5 Alamogordo City Commissioner, Sharon McDonald representing a government partnership to end blight and preserve historic buildings. Opening Spring 2026.
New York Avenue's 800 and 900 Block Makeover has been 7 years in the making and will open and be completed the end of October creating a new and rehabilitated MainStreet shopping district. With many new shops in the works and improvements to streets and sidewalks, Sharon McDonald has been an advocate and a champion for these enhancements each step of the way.
With grants and partnerships the reality of partnering with the cultural arts community is a vision coming to life. With murals painted by local artists and students from Alamogordo High School and the NMSU Alamogordo the reality of public art in the city center is coming alive thanks to the leadership of Alamogordo MainStreet and city advocate Commissioner Sharon McDonald.
The Chihuahuita neighborhood is older than the city of Alamogordo and yet much of the neighborhood went 125 years without sidewalks and ADA access for its neighbors within its blocks. Commissioner Sharon McDonald convinced the city and the commission the time had come to modernize access with the inner city. Via CDB Grants the vision is becoming a reality for District 5 and the city as a whole benefits.
